EMDR
getting started
cost & insurance

To choose an EMDR intensive in New York, start with the license: your therapist must hold a New York license to treat you while you’re in the state. Then ask about their EMDR training, how they prepare and follow up, what the whole process costs, and whether they’ll give you a written estimate.
In short
Confirm a current New York license and what it covers.

Why does the license matter in New York?
Psychotherapy is regulated by the state where the client is located during the session. A therapist who treats you in New York must be licensed in New York, whether you meet in person or online. You can check a clinician’s license through the New York State Office of the Professions, which lists licensed social workers, psychologists, and other professions.
Titles also vary. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-R in New York) is trained and licensed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Psychologists, mental health counselors, and marriage and family therapists hold other licenses. All can practice, but ask which license your therapist holds.
What EMDR training should a therapist have?
EMDR training is a separate program on top of a clinical license. Ask which training they completed, whether it was an approved program, and how much experience they have using EMDR. “Trained in EMDR” and “certified in EMDR” are different things, and a good therapist will explain exactly where they are. For background on the method and training standards, see EMDRIA.
What should I ask before booking an intensive?
How do you prepare clients? Look for a clear screening and preparation step.
How long is the extended session, and how many are planned?
What happens if I feel overwhelmed? There should be a plan.
Is there a follow-up session, and is it included?
What is the total cost? Ask for it in writing.
What is your cancellation policy?
Do you offer in-person and online? If online, confirm you’ll be in New York during the session.
How do online and in-person intensives compare?
In-person sessions give the therapist more to work with, and some people feel more settled in a dedicated space. Online sessions offer convenience and can work well if you have a private, quiet place and a steady connection. If you choose online, you generally need to be physically located in New York for a New York-licensed therapist. See our guide to online therapy in New York.
What does an EMDR intensive cost in New York?
Prices vary by practice, length, and what’s included. Most are self-pay. If you have out-of-network benefits, a superbill may let you request partial reimbursement, as explained in How to Use a Superbill for Therapy. For a closer look at pricing, read How Much Does an EMDR Intensive Cost?.
How do I know if a therapist is a good fit?
Credentials matter, but so does how you feel in the first conversation. Notice whether they listen, explain things clearly, and respect your pace. You don’t have to decide on the first call. Many therapists offer an initial conversation to see if you’re a match.
What should I know about telehealth EMDR in New York?
Many New York clinicians offer EMDR by video. If you choose this route, make sure you’ll be physically in New York during the session, since licensure follows the client’s location. Ask how the therapist adapts bilateral stimulation online, for example with on-screen movement, self-tapping, or audio tones, and what the plan is if the connection drops during processing. Choose a private, quiet space, and have a backup way to reach your therapist.
For some targets or levels of distress, an in-person session may be a better fit. A thoughtful therapist will tell you honestly which format they recommend for you.
How do I check a New York therapist’s credentials?
You can verify a license through the New York State Office of the Professions. Look for a current registration, the license type, and any disciplinary notes. Then ask about EMDR training: which program they completed, when, and how often they use it. Many clinicians list their training on their websites, so it’s fair to ask them to confirm.
What questions should I ask about safety and screening?
Ask whether the therapist screens for things that affect safety, such as current crisis, active substance use, dissociation, or major instability. Ask how they would adjust the plan if you’re not ready for an intensive. A therapist who is willing to say, “Let’s start with preparation,” is usually protecting you, not turning you away.
How far should I travel for an intensive?
A longer drive can be worth it if the fit is right, but factor in the day itself. Plan for the session length, travel time, and rest afterward. If you’re within reach of Westchester County, in-person intensives in Pleasantville are an option, and online sessions can work for people elsewhere in the state.
