Online Therapy in New York
Licensed care by secure video, from home.
How online sessions work
You meet by secure video at a scheduled time, from a private place of your choosing. Sessions run the same length as in person, and you talk just as you would in the office. We’ll send a secure link before your first session. Most people find the format easy within a few minutes, and it saves travel time and fits busy schedules.
The licensing rule that matters
Psychotherapy is regulated by the state where the client is located during the session. Our therapist is licensed in New York, so online sessions are for clients who are physically in New York at the time of the session. If you travel or move out of state, tell us early so we can plan, which may include pausing sessions or helping you find a clinician licensed where you’ll be.
What you’ll need
A device with a camera and microphone, a steady internet connection, and a private, quiet space where you won’t be overheard or interrupted. Headphones help with privacy and sound. Test your video and audio beforehand, silence notifications, and keep water and tissues nearby. We’ll walk you through anything you’re unsure about.
Is online therapy as effective as in person?
Who online therapy suits best
People with busy schedules, long commutes, or limited mobility. Parents and caregivers with little free time. People who feel more comfortable at home. People in parts of New York with few local providers. It can also be a good way to start if you’re unsure about therapy.
Privacy and confidentiality
Your sessions are confidential, with the same legal limits as in person, such as a risk of serious harm. Privacy also depends on your side: use a private room, avoid public Wi-Fi, and keep your device up to date. We’ll explain how we protect your information when you start.
Couples and families online
Couples and families can do online sessions too. Everyone can join from the same room on one device, or from different places. Sitting together can make the session feel closer to in person. Teens often find the format comfortable. Ask us how sessions work with more than one person.

What if the connection drops?
Technology sometimes fails. Agree in advance on a backup, such as switching to a phone call, and keep your phone nearby. If the connection drops, we’ll reconnect or call you, and we won’t charge for time lost to a technical problem on our end. A steady connection helps, so if you can, sit close to your router or use a wired connection.
How to make your space private and comfortable
Choose a room where you can close the door. If others are home, a white-noise machine or a fan outside the door helps. Sit somewhere comfortable, with water, tissues, and a notebook. Some people take sessions in a parked car when home isn’t private, which can work if it’s safe and you’re not driving. Make the space feel like yours.
