For the one decision that’s keeping you up at night

Not everything needs months of therapy. Sometimes you’re facing one big decision, like a divorce, a job change, or a major move, and you want a clear head and a clear plan. A Blueprint session is built for exactly that.

How it works

You start with a focused 90-minute session to get clear on what’s really going on and what your options are. Then two 30-minute follow-ups help you act on your plan and adjust as things change.

Who it suits

People who want real movement from a short, defined engagement. It’s also a low-commitment way to find out what working together feels like.

Decisions Blueprint sessions are for

A Blueprint session is built around one decision or one problem. Common examples include whether to stay in or leave a marriage, whether to change careers, whether to move, how to handle a conflict with a family member, whether to have a child, or how to respond to a major life event. These are decisions where you want a clear head and a clear plan, without committing to months of therapy.

How the 90 minutes are used

The first session is a focused 90 minutes. We start by getting clear on what’s really going on and what you want. Then we look at your options, the values and fears behind them, and what you’d need to know to decide. We separate facts from fears, test the choices against what matters to you, and sketch next steps. You leave with a plan you can act on.

The two follow-ups

Two 30-minute follow-up sessions keep you moving. The first checks how your thinking and plans are holding up and helps you adjust. The second helps you act, close the loop, and decide what, if anything, comes next. They’re shorter and more practical than a typical session, which keeps the process light and focused.

What you leave with

A clearer understanding of what you want and why, a ranked set of options, a realistic plan for the next few weeks, and, often, relief from carrying the decision alone. You may also leave with a few practical tools for making decisions under pressure. Our guide to making a big life decision describes a framework we use.

Who it’s not for

A Blueprint session isn’t designed for ongoing mental health treatment, for people in crisis, or for situations involving safety risks. If something deeper is going on, we’ll tell you honestly and help you move into ongoing sessions. If you’re thinking about divorce, our guide offers questions to consider first.

How it compares with ongoing therapy

Ongoing therapy explores patterns over time. A Blueprint session is time-limited and decision-focused. Some people find that one is enough. Others discover they want deeper work and continue with individual or couples sessions afterward. Either way, you’ll have started with clarity.

An example of how a Blueprint session might go

Imagine someone deciding whether to leave a long career. In the first session they name the decision in a sentence, list what they fear and what they want, and sort facts from worries. They test each option against their values, and identify two small experiments, such as talking to someone in the new field and reviewing finances. In the follow-ups, they review what they learned and decide on a next step. The decision becomes clearer because it’s been worked through, not just thought about.

Why a short, focused format works

Open-ended therapy isn’t always what people need. For a defined decision, a time-limited format keeps the work practical and the commitment light. A deadline can also help, since decisions can drift without one. People often say the structure itself brings relief: there’s a beginning, a middle, and an end.

Preparing for your session

Write down the decision in one sentence. Note the options you’re considering, what you’re most afraid of, and what matters most to you. Gather any key facts, such as dates or numbers, but don’t worry about having everything. Come ready to be honest. Our guide to making a big life decision describes a framework you can start using today.

What a decision framework can do for you

Big decisions are hard partly because we try to solve them with our emotions alone. A framework gives you a way to separate fear from fact, name your values, compare real options, and test them in small ways. It doesn’t decide for you. It makes your own thinking clearer and more confident. That’s what a Blueprint session is designed to do, in a short, structured format.

Common questions

Can I do it online?

Yes, for clients located in New York. In-person sessions are in Pleasantville.

What does it cost?

$499 for the full Blueprint: one 90-minute session and two 30-minute follow-ups.

Do I need to prepare?

No. It can help to write down the decision in one sentence and what you’re most afraid of.

What if I’m still undecided at the end?

That’s okay. The aim is clarity and a next step, not forcing a decision. Sometimes the right next step is gathering one more piece of information or waiting until a certain date. You’ll leave knowing why, and what to do.

Can I bring a partner?

Blueprint sessions are one-on-one. If a decision involves your partner, couples sessions may fit better. We can help you choose.

Is this the same as therapy?

It’s focused, short-term support. If you decide you want deeper work, we can move into ongoing sessions.
